Cooperation Project in SIDS Caribbean region

FMI provided two experts to participate in the SIDS-Caribbean Project 2001-2003

The overall objective of the SIDS-Caribbean Project "Preparedness to Climate Variability and Global Change in Small Island Developing States, Caribbean Region" is to provide tools for better planning for sustainable development in the Caribbean region. The project includes the following countries: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Commonwealth of Dominica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba, St. Christopher and Nevis, St.Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos. The project budget is financially supported with USD 3,5 million by the Government of Finland. The Executing Agency is WMO. The project office is based at the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology, Bridgetown, Barbados. The Project Team Leader is Mr. Steve Pollonais.

Mrs. Lea Leskinen, FMI, was appointed by WMO to the Project Data Management Expert. She will perform the duties and responsibilities related to the upgrading of the database management systems.

Mr. Juha A. Karhu, FMI, was appointed by WMO to the Project Junior Professional. He will assist the Project Team Leader implementing the tasks indicated in the Project Documet.

The Project will support the National Meteorological Services to strengthen their capacities to provide the information needed in national planning and to fulfil their international commitments such as of UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Convention to Combat Desertification, Convention on Biological Diversity, Convention on the Protection of the Ozone Layer, and others. Therefore, the Project comprise the following components:

  • improvement of the telecommunications systems at national and regional levels
  • rehabilitation and upgrading of the observing networks
  • renovation of the regional technical laboratory for the calibration and maintenance of instruments
  • upgrading of the database management systems
  • implementation of data rescue programmes and
  • training and awareness building
