The rehabilitation of the observation stations was carried out mainly
by providing stations with new meteorological instruments and the SMD maintenance
workshops with spares and tools. Special attention was paid to the rehabilitation
of agrometeorological stations. Two upper-air sounding stations (Khartoum
and El Fasher) were upgraded with new systems to measure upper-air temperature,
humidity, pressure and wind. The number of operational synoptic weather
stations increased from 27 to 35. Eight of these are also serving as agrometeorological
stations. The number of rainfall stations was doubled from 350 to 700.
Some of interruptions in the observation stations was caused by the internal
unrest in south.
