The FMI assisted in the implementation of a bilateral Finnish-Nicaraguan environmental programme in Nicaragua by carrying out a project on climate change. The objective of the project was to produce reliable, up-to-date information for the needs of both policymaking and research on climate change. The project was carried out in cooperation with the Nicaraguan Ministry of the Environment "Ministerio de Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (MARENA)", the Nicaraguan meteorological institute "Instituto Nicaraguense de Estudios Territoriales (INETER)" and the Finnish Environment Institute (FEI). During the climate change project, the meteorological and hydrological observation networks of INETER were modernized. A new database system was created into which a geographic information system was incorporated. The geographic information system is to be used for climate applications and for publication of a climate atlas. A flood model was devised for Lake Managua to allow reliable forecasting of the water level.
